America the "beautiful"?
These animals would have forgiven up to their dying breath.
I feel the deepest shame seeing these. Whatever we do--this can't happen again. No matter what!

As one of the rescuers that was in the city limits for over three weeks I thinks these Pictures are irresposible. Yes, I saw this type of scene repeated daily but to answer the question of why and how there are a thousand different reasons. So many times the circumstances were well beyond the control of the pet owner. I have direct knowledge pet owners that were forced out under the threats. Some were lucky in their own self evacuation to keep themselves alive. Many were taken out by helicopter so there was simply no room. Some stayed with their pets and payed the price with their own lives.Like I said their were countless reasons, but it is not fair to impart and judge on situtions most know nothing about!

To Michael - what is irresponsible is that there was no relief/rescue plan in place for these or any other animals involved in disaster situations. The blame and judgement should be placed on mankind as a whole - we do not value that which we consider different - including animals. Many people do not recognize their pets as creatures that recognize pain, hunger and fear. Many of the pets that perished during this tragedy will be replaced, just like jewellery or books. Those who do not recognize their worth do not feed or care properly for their animals, much less fix/spay them to prevent the huge numbers of strays/ferals that roam our communities. We can and should judge and blame our society for overlooking those who cannot speak for or defend themselves.

Note - kudos to you for taking the time to assist and aid. I may not agree with your statements, but I applaud your action!

i've looked at these several times today, the tears always come. they did not ask to be born, a human allowed their creation and therefore should have been responsible for them. this is so very sad. apparently 3 of those pictured were on some sort of tether -- a leash, a tie out cable and heavy chain. i would think better to run loose and be found/helped than to die slowly while tied up.

i applaude the response to michael and totally agree. to many humans have a 'disposable' attitude -- so it died, get another. something wrong with that..........

thanks for the site, i've been through all the photos and check for the daily updates, i was not prepared for todays photos but they need to be seen and hope that they do some good.

For those of you viewing these pictures and are moved by them, channel your sympathy and help. There is an on-going investigation of the school schootings in St. Bernard parish and Pasado Safe Haven (www.pasadosafehaven.org) is paying for over 30 necropsies to be done. They need donations to help cover the costs. The necropsies will help cement the argument in the case against the person/people that murdered the dogs in the schools there. You can still make a difference....this kind of thing doesn't have to happen again.

I don't know about all the animals, but I can tell you about several. The top dog picture is of an animal that was still tied to it's leash and probably drown. The white cat near the top was most likely killed by the two pitbulls in the back yard...the dogs were hungry and were foraging for food and killed this cat the day after we saw them for the first time. And for the record, the dogs were very friendly pits around people and other dogs. But the poor guy had fight scars all over him. And the black lab that was shot at the bottom...yes, you saw my series of photos on him...he was shot. When Eric (ericsdogblog.com) drove down the street one morning, he saw the owner outside crying. The guy said his dog had been shot and proceded to show Eric where the dog had been on the porch AFTER the storm...and how it bled to death all the way down. It was very, very sad. And the very last dog appears to have been shot, but truthfully, I don't remember the circumstances behind the photo...it will probably show up in the video I took. Also, there are more dead animals capture on my video, but I haven't had a chance to go through it yet. There is definitely one of a dog who had hung himself because the owner used a "training" or choke chain on him. We need new laws against them.

michaael, i don't think many blame the owners. we all know some owners were forced out and were NOT allowed to bring their animals. we will never know all of the circumstances. i agree with cat. we must go beyond tears (and blame) and open our wallets. if we cannot do that, we certainly can do other things involving volunteerism.

hmmm... Michael Lohr, I don't think you said what you meant to say. Surely when you say "I thinks these Pictures are irresponsible", you must mean that you think the resulting comments are "irresponsible". How can the photos of truth be wrong? Sure, their posting could be thought of as a "bad" choice, but do you really believe this to be true - at this site? Look at all of the archived photo-sets on this site. They are known to be absent of any sensationalized or repulsive visions of agony and, although it is a shock to see the current batch of photos devoted mainly to bitter and painful endings, it is a reality that really should not be ignored.

Maybe you're right about some of the comments impugning assumed assholian behavior to anyone that might abandon their pets. Of course one should not cast blame when we know so little. But hey pal, give us all a break here. We are in pain too. We want a reason for this horror so that we can anchor our pain and restabilize our souls.

But mainly, you too don’t know enough to say that this site’s posting of these pictures is “irresponsible”.

I like your own personal website, I should add, and your excellent photos of a seemingly never-ending civilization of desolation. But when I see a picture of a chained dog in death, I can actually feel that desolation. I wish not to feel it, but I must.

Just one last thing in regard to the pictures being irresponsible. I took several listed here, and many, many more (all available through my website). These photos were not taken to horrify, they were taken to tell a story about what happened in the aftermath of Katrina. We will all see different things, and the story told will be different for all of us. It is what we do with that knowledge that makes us either responsible or not. For me, I have chose to talk about it through photos and words because I was there, and I think it's important that the whole story is told...not just the happy reunions (of which we've had many). I also hope the photos motivate people to do something to help us make a difference. None of us want to see this happen again, for the many reasons that it did.

I agree! I think the issue that I have is that they were on the first page, without any warning. I thank you for moving the pics off the first page and ask that a disclaimer is posted. Just from experiance some will not be able to handle such horror

I agree All of us do have a story to tell and the truth must be availble for others.
But we must me unified in our response to ensure that this will not happen again.
One step is for people to take action and support the legislation that is being proposed in Congress.

Eric - just as people should better care for their animals, parents of school age children should be monitoring their kid's computer use. My 11 year old son reads these posts, and yours as well, but given the subject matter, I take the time to scroll through first to ensure that, given the subject matter, there is nothing that is inappropriate or too scary for him.

Children need to be aware of the issues and it is up to the parent, not the computer, to educate them.

In spite of the horror displayed in these pics, there are far worse things on the net for kids to be discussing and seeing!

These pictures need to be made available - with or without warnings. A picture paints a thousand words. These animals were brutally murdered. So were the animals that died of thirst and starvation whilst waiting for people who were not allowed to come find them. And so were those who drowned in their cages.

There were too many animals like this. The most optimistic interpretation of demographic data suggests that around 50,000 animals were not rescued. We have to make sure that this total lack of respect for life never happens again.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and photos with us. Thank you for doing what you did to help. Let's hope and pray that we never have to do this again.

while i would not start casting aspersions on any particular stranger who left his or her animal, without knowing the details, i have +no+ problem with stating the truth:

hundreds, who knows how many, people just left their animals because they were thoughtless and irresponsible caretakers.

many had the means, the money, the wherewithal to evacuate with their pets -- and just chose not to out of a sublime lack of understanding or empathy of what it means to be a pet caretaker.

i would never make blanket judgements against all the humans who were separated from their pets. but the cold truth is that many, +many+ of these deaths were absolutely preventable, if the human caretakers had bothered to take their caretaking seriously.

the number of absolutely preventable deaths is incredibly high, higher than i suspect any one of us would find acceptable.

not bothering to have crates or carriers, leaving the pet because it "wasn't convenient to bring it and they'd be back soon anyway." those aren't acceptable reasons and it needs to be trumpeted that they are not acceptable. and this needs to be linked to the pictures above.

pictures often are more eloquent, more convincing to humans than words.

let these pictures speak for the animals who can not speak for themselves.

best --

The pictures are irresponsible??? You must be joking. They are reality--the reality of what individuals, governments, and society as a whole does to nonhuman animals when they become inconvenient. I applaud the posting of these pictures. They should be on the nightly news and shown on street corners. Maybe, just maybe, if people were forced to see the horrors they allow to happen, they wouldn't happen so often.

Much as I cringe to see such horrors, these kind of images need to be displayed so that what happened cannot be swept under the carpet. No denial - no glossing over with a fluff piece - just the cold hard facts (and they dont get any colder or harder than this). Any third world country would be embarassed by this - for this to happen in a 'civilized' country is a shame that USA will never live down - My heart aches for the lost ones, as well as for the kindhearted folks who went to help and had these images etched in their brains there are no words to convey my sympathies. Let us never forget. For those who would like - there is a site www.petloss.com that has a monday night candle ceremony to honor our lost animals. Whatever you believe in - if you beleive in anything - please pray that this never happens again.

I went and worked animal rescue, all the time wondering where the media was. I was without T V but am reasonably sure even CNN didn't do the situation justice. I found people back home had no idea the magnitude of the suffering these animals endured. Do we make them look at this stuff and hope they will have some sort of revelation, or will it be like the rest of the violence on T V...and become so every day that no one will be affected? As for the owners...We can't know each individual situation, BUT, Even from a shelter, one phone call to HSUS would have sent someone to check their home. For many that would have been too late. Those chained and tied so they couldn't even save themselves didn't stand a chance, and that sort of thing is uncomprehensible to me. Many "owners" have still made no effort to find their pets...they'll just get new ones when they're settled. Not on my watch!

This is Dec 27th and I am still crying. It doesn't take these pictures but God dang it!!!!! How could we let this happen? These animals did not deserve to die this way! I went to Lamar Dixon. Several of the pictures I took are on this site but my name is not attached. I will NEVER get over this experience. NEVER! There are still animals out there that need help. I wish I could just go and stay there until they are all taken care of. I just don't know who would take care of my five dogs and one cat. Two of my dogs came from Katrina. A third one was reunited with his owner. I sure hope God forgives us for allowing this to happen. I don't know if I can but I sure hope he does.

I was down at Lamar Dixon helping with the animals after Hurricane Katrina. It was awful! I even have some pictures on this blog but my name is not attached which is ok. I can tell you that I will be forever haunted by this tradgey as will all the others who helped out no matter what fashion. It has been horrible. I hope that God can forgive us for allowing this to happen. I wish I could still be down there but I don't have anyone to take care of my 5 dogs and 1 cat. Two of my dogs came from the hurricane. One other was reunited with his owner. I will never forget their eyes when they first looked at me. I will never forget how afraid they were. NEVER. To think that there are STILL animals down there that need help and where is everyone? HSUS - took the money and ran. ASPCA - took the money and ran. Best Friends, Jane Garrison and others - all the little people - have stayed and done their best. God bless you. May God have mercy on our souls!

Everyone who sees these photos should send them, or at least the Web link to them, to New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco, and President George W. Bush, pointing out that these horrors and the many others they represent are the expected outgrowth of the "thinking" that forced countless people to leave their precious pets behind as the price of rescue from Hurricane Katrina. This truly is "unforgivable."

Demand to know from each of these "leaders" what they have to say for themselves and what they plan to do to make sure that people's pets are henceforth always included and protected in situations where people are urged, asked, or forced to evacuate their homes. Pets are as much family members as are the two-legged variety.

BTW, does anyone know exactly what percentage of pets that people had to leave behind or give up indeed were rescued? And what percentage has been reunited with their human friends? Whatever happened with the dog Snowball?

Let us channel our sorrow, outrage, and anger into action as we demand: Never again!

As far as the debate goes about whether to show images of dead animals, I don't think it is right to show them for the sake of gratuitous gore. But I do think it is critically important to show the general public what happens when pets are not evacuated with their owners, no matter whose fault it is. The general public needs to know that this type of event (perhaps not as widespread as this disaster was) can happen anywhere anytime due to fires, floods, volcanic erruption, earthquake, etc. They must plan ahead, especially where their pets are concerned. So yes, these pictures serve an important lesson to those who did not see what happened to animals because the mainstream media only covered the human story for the most part.

I don't believe it was irresponsible to post these photos for people to see, because People NEED to see what happens when furry family members are left behind to fend for themselves during a disaster. ALL family members to include the fur kids have to be included in Disaster Evacuations and Shelters NEED to be set up to accomodate pets. I am a Red Cross Disaster Relief Volunteer and I have been on many Disaster Operations and the toll it takes on the Psyche of a person having to leave their Furry Family Member behind is just horrible!! The Government and ALL the respoding Agencies NEED to come together and figure out a plan that WILL include Pets in a Disaster Action Plan so that No Family Pet is left Behind during a Disaster ever again so that Picture such as these posted will Never have to be posted again.

My heart goes out to the Grieving Families of these poor pets that had to be abandoned and than died such horrible deaths and my heart aches for the pets still out there scared, lonely and starving.

I think we are all in part responsible for not having places for people to go with their pets in case of evacuation. I personally take all of my cats and hamsters with me when I evacuate, and know people who cannot afford hotels and go to local shelters do not have the same opportunity. Please make sure your local shelters have disaster plans that are REAL. We now have 2 shelters, one will take up to 200 animals. This is not sufficient for a major metropolitan area. We have work to do so the tragedies were not in vain. Peace be with you all.

I respect you for your willingness & courage to stop the inhuman tortures of animals, whom are so helpless. My greatness appreciation.
Animals have their rights too. We, human beings, should stop thinking that we own the world, when we are actually sharing it with others too.

Hope other animals lovers will help stop puppies mills too. http://www.prisonersofgreed.org
Else, you can see what my fellow country has done for other ill-treated animals. http://www.asdsingapore.com/index.php
